A Driving Force in the Provincial EconomyThe automotive industry is the largest manufacturing sector in the country. Capital investment by motor manufacturers in South Africa is in excess of R15-billion, of which R3-billion was invested in 2005 and a further R6-billion in 2006. According to Statistics South Africa in 2006 the manufacturing sector for motor vehicles, parts and accessories, and other transport equipment recorded the highest increase in growth on a yearly basis at 15,1 percent.

How are they doing?THE Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) was created in 1996, replacing the notoriously slow and inaccessible industrial courts, in order to provide a quick, low-cost and non-legalistic service to the South African labour market. The CCMA's cost to government last year was R208-million, and its operational costs are rising at 10% a year, but it appears that the CCMA offers taxpayers value for money - by providing a free public labour service that is generally perceived as quick, just and accessible. |

The multi-billion rand telecommunications industry is the fastest growing sector in the South African economy. It has more than 30 million cellular subscribers and marginally less than 5 million fixed-line subscribers - and is ranked amongst the top 20 telecommunications industries in the world.

Although the whole of South African is enjoying a surge in economic growth, perhaps nothing sums up the feeling of dynamic optimism bubbling under the surface of KwaZulu-Natal’s growing economy better than a comment made by Dr Zweli Mkhize, provincial minister for finance and economic development, when he delivered his budget speech recently: “This year the journey to prosperity for all in the province continues.” |
